City of Melville: leadership training
INTRODUCTION
Aligned with the City of Melville's commitment to nurturing exceptional leadership and management practices, the CEO and executive team have partnered with Aspire Performance Training to amplify their leadership skills.
This program is part of a larger company-wide training initiative, currently underway, for the City of Melville, to be progressively completed over the next few years.
Offering a bespoke training solution, Aspire's recent workshop involved the team working together following their Human Synergistics LSI program, 360 feedback, to focus on constructive styles of the circumplex which focuses on Achievement, Self-Actualizing, Humanistic-Encouraging and Affiliate. The program continued using Stephen R Covey’s ‘Trust and Inspire’ to demonstrate the change in leadership from a command and control to unleashing greatness in others using a “trust and Inspire’ leadership style.
This particular session was custom-designed and co-facilitated by Jane Mahon and Denise Neville, based on the team's Human Synergistics LSI program 360 feedback.

The Opportunity & Challenge
The City of Melville's leadership recognised an opportunity to further enhance their effectiveness and collaboration as a cohesive executive team.
The challenge lay in cultivating an environment of trust, inspiration, and cooperation that would enable the team to lead more effectively and bring about positive change.
How Aspire Performance Training Responded
Aspire Performance Training's response was thoughtfully crafted to provide an immersive and transformative experience for the executive team.
Carefully curated, the facilitated session was designed to enable the executive team to deeply explore and embody constructive leadership styles. Against the picturesque backdrop of the South Perth Yacht Club, the executive team, under the leadership of CEO Marten Tieleman, enthusiastically participated in candid and supportive discussions. These discussions effectively aligned their aspirations with the guiding principles of the circumplex model.
Based on the team's Human Synergistics LSI program 360 feedback, the session focused on fostering the principles of 'Trust & Inspire,' drawing inspiration from the wisdom of Stephen R. Covey.
By integrating constructive leadership styles—such as Achievement, Self-Actualizing, Humanistic-Encouraging, and Affiliate—participants honed their skills in effective leadership.
The day's proceedings were expertly co-facilitated by Jane Mahon and Denise Neville, further enhancing the experience.

TRAINING
Human Synergistics Life Styles Inventory (LSI) Program
Self-Perception Assessment:
360-Degree Feedback
In addition to self-assessment, the LSI program often incorporates feedback from colleagues, superiors, and subordinates.
This multisource feedback provides a well-rounded view of an individual's behavior and its impact on others.
Constructive Styles vs. Defensive Styles:
The LSI program categorizes thinking and behavioural styles into constructive styles (e.g., Achievement, Self-Actualizing, Humanistic-Encouraging, Affiliative) and passive/defensive styles (e.g., Approval, Conventional, Dependent, Avoidance).
These categories offer a nuanced understanding of how individuals approach challenges, relationships, and tasks.
Individual and Group Insights:
The program provides individuals with detailed profiles of their dominant and limiting styles. Group reports aggregate data to offer insights into collective team dynamics and areas for improvement.
Development Planning:
Based on the assessment results, participants develop personalised action plans to enhance constructive styles and manage passive/defensive tendencies.
The program encourages self-awareness and intentional growth.
Leadership Development:
The LSI program is often employed as a tool for leadership development. It helps leaders recognize their impact on organisational culture, communication, and performance and guides them toward more effective leadership practices.
Benefits:
-
Self-Awareness: The LSI program offers participants a deeper understanding of their thinking patterns, motivations, and how they are perceived by others.
-
Personal Growth: By identifying areas for improvement, individuals can work on enhancing their constructive thinking styles and minimizing passive/defensive behaviours.
-
Effective Leadership: The LSI program equips leaders with insights into their leadership styles, enabling them to create more positive and productive work environments.
-
Enhanced Communication: Understanding one's communication tendencies helps individuals adapt their approach for better interpersonal interactions.
-
Team Dynamics: The program facilitates improved team collaboration by highlighting areas of alignment and potential conflict.
-
Organizational Culture: By fostering constructive thinking and behaviours, the LSI program contributes to the development of a healthier and more productive organisational culture.
Stephen R. Covey's Principles
Trust:
Covey places great importance on trust as the cornerstone of all relationships, whether personal or professional. He highlights the concept of the "trust dividend," which suggests that when trust is established, communication becomes more efficient, collaboration flourishes, and progress is expedited. Trust is built through consistent integrity, transparency, and the alignment of actions with values.
Inspire:
Inspiration, according to Covey, is about influencing others from the inside out. Leaders who inspire have a profound impact on those around them by demonstrating authenticity, empathy, and a clear sense of purpose. Covey emphasizes that inspirational leaders focus on understanding the needs and aspirations of their team members, enabling them to align their goals with the organization's vision.
Personal Responsibility:
Covey's principles of trust and inspiration are underpinned by the concept of personal responsibility. He advocates for individuals to take ownership of their actions, attitudes, and behaviours. By doing so, individuals can contribute positively to their relationships, teams, and organisations.
Empowerment and Collaboration:
Leaders who prioritize trust and inspiration empower their teams to take initiative and contribute their best efforts. Covey encourages collaborative environments where diverse perspectives are valued, and individuals are given opportunities to grow and develop.
Habit of Win-Win:
One of Covey's "7 Habits" is the "Win-Win" mindset, which aligns with the principles of trust and inspiration. It emphasizes seeking mutually beneficial solutions in interactions and negotiations, fostering an atmosphere of cooperation and respect.
Effective Communication:
Clear and open communication is a pivotal aspect of Covey's principles. Leaders who build trust and inspire others are skilled communicators who listen actively, express themselves authentically, and foster understanding among team members.
Leading with Vision:
Covey's principles of trust and inspiration encourage leaders to articulate a compelling vision that resonates with their teams. This vision serves as a source of motivation and direction, guiding individuals toward shared goals and objectives.
