Empowering Women Leaders:
Jessica Sutherland's Inspiring Journey with Aspire
At Aspire Performance Training, we're privileged to nurture the growth of many extraordinary women each year, equipping them with the tools and confidence to leave indelible marks on their industries and the world at large.
Our diverse alumnae leverage their enhanced leadership and business acumen to drive meaningful change, epitomizing the transformative power of dedicated training.
Among these inspiring tales is that of Jessica Sutherland, a passionate Sustainability Engagement Officer at the City of Melville, Western Australia. Her journey exemplifies how strategic learning and mentorship can kindle significant progress, especially in the crucial field of sustainability.
Navigating the Path to Influence and Impact
Jessica's story begins in the lush outskirts of Perth, where her formative years, steeped in nature and nurtured by educator parents, laid the groundwork for her future pursuits. Jessica recalls, "My passion for public speaking was sparked in high school, thanks to a teacher who saw potential in my enthusiasm. That support propelled me through various degrees and roles, each strengthening my resolve to make a difference in the environmental sector."
Her academic achievements and active participation in climate advocacy have positioned her as a key player in sustainability, culminating in her impactful role with the City of Melville.
Transformative Learning with Aspire
Jessica said, "Aspire's training program came at the perfect time for me in my career transition."
"Their support and coaching have given me the confidence and the skills to transfer my experience from the research space to local governments and learn how to lead from any role."
She also acknowledges the support of the City of Melville for including her in the program highlighting the importance of this year’s UN International Women's Day theme - Count Her In: Invest in Women. Accelerate Progress.
The Aspire program and Melville's support highlight that everyone can be a leader.
Providing practical education and tools to be better leaders is key to supporting women leaders. "The monthly workshop sessions have enabled leaders from across the organisation to come together to get to know each other, learn to be better leaders together and be supported by tools and coaching to implement this in practice", she says.
Overcoming Barriers with Grace and Determination
Jessica's journey also highlights the ubiquitous challenges faced by women in leadership. "While being a woman in any work role has presented challenges, I've been fortunate to work alongside many supportive people who advocate for leaders at all career stages and backgrounds, "she reflects.
"There have been times when I've been the token female or not included in work or taken seriously due to a perception of lack of experience or knowledge, however, I've also entered the workforce at a time when this is more openly talked about and there are strategies and opportunities in place. I've sought out people who are champions and changemakers, learning from how they lead and find balance in their lives. Flexible approaches to work have enabled me to take care of my physical and mental health whilst also progressing in my career and leadership journey, " she says.
Her commitment to mentorship and personal growth stands as a testament to her dedication and the broader potential for positive change within the industry.
Leadership and Influence
Jess' leadership style is people-focused and adaptable to different situations and individuals' needs.
"I champion collaboration for positive change and bringing an open mind to work and people’s contributions."
"Recently, and with Aspire’s support, I've become more confident and intentional in my leadership, I feel less like I need to jump on every opportunity just because it is there and able to focus on where I can best add value," Jess says.
Empowering Advice for Aspiring Leaders
Jessica encourages other women aiming for leadership roles to be intentional and prioritise their needs. "Our leadership journey is all unique," she advises, advocating for authenticity and the importance of building relationships and continuous personal growth.
"I’ve focused on putting people (and nature) at the centre of my work and building relationships beyond a role title, we all have a story to tell - you can learn from everyone.", she continues.
A Vision for Women in Sustainability
Looking ahead, Jessica emphasizes the critical role women play in crafting sustainable futures. "If the world keeps implementing solutions designed only by particular people, we will only get solutions that work for those people," she argues, advocating for inclusive and diverse approaches to sustainability challenges.
Personal Growth and Development
Jessica states, that to achieve personal and professional development in your career, the key is to:
- Keep in contact with people from previous roles, check in with them and their journey – we all have lessons to share and you never know where future opportunities may be.
- Clearly define the areas in leadership you focus on and what improvement looks like for you- continuous improvement
- You have to put your own oxygen mask on first – I am a stronger and more resilient person from the mental & physical health challenges I have faced but I am learning to slow down and focus less on perfectionism through the Aspire program.
- Have fun and be creative!
